CPSC Advances Proposed E-Bike Battery Safety Rule to Public Hearing cover

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has opened the next public stage of its proposed mandatory safety standard for lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and other micromobility products. A virtual hearing is scheduled for October 21, giving manufacturers, safety specialists and other stakeholders an opportunity to comment directly on the plan.

The underlying proposal, published in June, would require covered electrical systems to meet applicable voluntary safety standards, with additional changes specified by the commission. Its scope includes e-bikes, electric scooters and other micromobility devices powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The agency’s aim is to reduce fire and burn risks associated with thermal runaway, a failure process that can spread rapidly between battery cells.

The October hearing does not make the proposal a final rule. Instead, it adds oral testimony to the written comments already collected during the rulemaking process. Requests to speak and advance copies of presentations are due on October 15.

Although the proceeding is taking place in the United States, its outcome could matter to the wider e-bike industry. Battery packs, chargers and complete drive systems are traded internationally, so mandatory requirements in a major market can influence product testing, documentation and supplier choices elsewhere. Established European brands may already design around recognised safety standards, but a binding rule could place greater scrutiny on replacement batteries, chargers and lower-cost imports.

For buyers, the development reinforces the value of matched battery-and-charger systems, documented certification and dependable dealer support.
